Unleash Your Curiosity

Are you a leader fuelled by curiosity?

“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious,” said Albert Einstein.

Why do I relate to his words so much?

I’ve found curiosity to be highly regarded in the world of science but one of the most undervalued words in the world of business. Yet, what else leads to new ideas, new jobs, and new industries but curiosity.

Unleashing your curiosity as a leader is critical if you want you to continuously learn, grow, and innovate.

Just as an athlete trains to improve their physical performance, a leadership athlete must constantly improve their skills and abilities, especially when it comes to curiosity.

After all, the future belongs to the curious they say.

So how do you harness and unleash your curiosity?

  1. Create space. You won’t be your most curious self in the mundane. Make time to unleash your curiosity in thought, space, and activity.
  2. Focus on the big picture. What is your big picture vision and how are you and your team working to get there?
  3. Question constantly. Accept that you don’t have all the answers. Ask lots of why questions. Seek to fill information gaps. Inspire others to do the same.
  4. Challenge assumptions. The paradox of success says, what got you here won’t get you there. Make sure your assumptions are not limiting your options.
  5. Explore new ideas. The world is full of new possibilities waiting to be discovered. How are you and your team capturing ideas so nothing gets missed or lost?
  6. Make improvements. Curiosity does not always lead to breakthrough innovation. Incremental improvement is smart business too.
  7. Be adaptable. They say the only constant is change. Be willing to change before you have to in your role and even in your business model.
  8. Foster a culture of curiosity. Be a leader that cultivates curiosity in others. Capture curiosity in your values and reward it when you see it done well.

Wrapping up

Let’s not undervalue curiosity but unleash it in a world that requires us now more than ever to be leadership athletes. Curiosity helps us navigate uncertainty and make decisions in complex situations. By staying curious, we’re better able to anticipate and respond to change, as well as identify new opportunities for growth and development.

In short, by unleashing our curiosity we can continuously learn, innovate, and enhance our skills while fostering a culture of innovation and growth within our organisations.
